NEARLY DAN

Friday 6th February

Less tribute and more homage to the jazz-influenced best sellers Steely Dan, Nearly Dan, is saviour to the legions of Dan fans, desperate to hear the meticulously crafted grooves and allusive lyrical style of Donald Fagan, Walter Brecker et al. when chances to hear the real thing are so uncommon. Nearly Dan's approach is faithful, though not reverential, and relaxed but as tight as their namesakes and their uncannily precise imitations are testament to hours of rehearsal and a great deal of talent.

Oi!

Saturday 21st February

An infamous group of hardcore punk rock anarchists, Anti Nowhere League have been living the punk lifestyle for over two decades. Lead singer Animal and his friend Magoo formed the band in 1980, and promptly got arrested at their very first gig. The history of the League is littered with brushes with the law, rock and roll misbehaviour and very loud music.

HORSE

Wednesday 25th February

Horse McDonald is a unique talent. A musician all of her life, her career has spanned three decades, seven albums, eight singles, hundreds of live appearances, and the inevitable ups and downs of life in the creative spotlight. She has performed alongside artists as diverse as Tina Turner, Robbie Williams, Burt Bacharach, Bryan Ferry, BB King, Aztec Camera, Nanci Griffith, Sir Ian McKellen, Lesley Garrett, Pet Shop Boys, All Saints, Kid Creole, Culture Club, Erasure and is currently writing with Michelle McManus. She is highly appreciated by a large and enthusiastic fan base. A brave artist, she sees no boundaries to her genre, having performed live with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra at the famous Barrowland(subsequently released as a live album - Both Sides). She has also appeared on legendary 1980s TV show The Tube. In 1998 she staged the Our Lips Shouldnt Touch show over a ten night run at the drill hall in London, singing everything from Doris Day to Gluck via Madonna. The same year she performed at both Celtic Connections and the Edinburgh International Festival.

Following an album of covers - Coveted, and a critically acclaimed live album Only all of me, Horse has recently completed a new studio album - working with her trademark energy, creativity, and enthusiasm. The single, "Same Old, Same Old" was a taster for a new album "Red Haired Girl", currently scheduled for full release in mid-2007.

Horse McDonald has been described as an artist 'who wouldn't have been out of place on the stax or motown labels in their heyday'. Often called 'the voice', she has an amazing pedigree, is utterly unique, and continues to astonish.

JOHN COOPER CLARKE

£15adv

Thursday 26th February

In a vain attempt at bourgeois credibility, Manchester's sharp-dressed, sharp-delivering punk poet Lenny, changed his name to John Cooper Clarke and embarked on a polysyllabic excursion though Thrillsville. Clad in the slum chic of the hipster, he issued the slang anthems of the zip age in the desperate esperanto of bop. Expect a mix of hilarious anecdotes of life in a Northern town interspersed with machine-gun fast delivery of some of his best poems. 'If you think poetry is dull and boring, or posh and erudite - you haven't seen JCC!'

IT BITES

£17.50 adv

Friday 6th March

Formed in Cumbria 1982, but rarely fashionable due to being too rock for the pop crowd, and vice versa! This didn't stop them filling huge venues and through sheer instrumental virtuosity, blistering live shows, a compelling song-driven mix of prog, pop, hard rock and metal they remain a force to be reckoned with even today and with a (perfect) replacement frontman in John Mitchell. From the contemporary pop/funk of Big Lad In The Windmill through Once Around The World's 70s prog, to the intricate hard rock and metal of the Eat Me In St Louis, this is a connoisseur's band. A band for devotees of musical excellence, eschewing the 3 minute pop song but still keeping melody and wit alive even in grand opuses like Still Too Young To Remember and Underneath Your Pillow. Welcome back!

Juliet is a very talented singer and songwriter from Tummery in County Tyrone. Her music makes no doubt that this is the arrival of a sharp talent with an arresting voice. The songs have a flinty no-bullsh*t world view from a woman who's quick enough to see from both sides of her success.

A compelling performer. Underestimate her at your cost.

Mike replaced Paul Jones in Manfred Mann. The band had already had a string of hits and went on to have nine more with D'Abo at the helm, including the Dylan covers Just Like A Woman and The Mighty Quinn which reached Number One.

A prolific songwriter, he penned 'Handbags and Gladrags', a hit for Chris Farlowe and recently given a new lease of life by the Stereophonics as the theme tune for cult TV series ' The Office'.

He also wrote ' Finger of Fudge' - an unforgettable commercial jingle for those of a certain age !!

This initimate performance features many of his best known hit songs, other well known hits from the 60s / 70s - and the story behind many of the songs and his life on the road. Manfred Mann:

NIK KERSHAW

Saturday 21st March

Nik Kershaw was born in Bristol in 1958. His formative years were spent in Ipswich where he discovered his love for music. In 1978, after three years working as a civil servant, he turned professional, serving his apprenticeship playing guitar in jazz fusion and functions bands.

He signed with MCA Records in 1983 and released his debut album “Human Racing” in 1984. It achieved multi-platinum sales and launched Nik’s career worldwide. His records spent 50 weeks on the UK singles chart that year, beating all other soloists.

The equally successful “The Riddle” followed and, in July 1985, he took the Wembley stage to perform at Live Aid.

In 1990, after four MCA albums and sales of over 8 million, Nik left the spotlight to concentrate on song writing and producing. The following years saw him working with Elton John, Chesney Hawkes – for whom he penned the Number 1 hit ‘The One and Only’, Cliff Richard, Bonnie Tyler, Lulu, Ronan Keating, Jason Donovan, Tony Banks, Michael W Smith, Connah Reeves, Nick Carter, The Hollies, Colin Blunstone, Imogen Heap, Gary Barlow and Let Loose.

He rekindled his recording career in 1998 with the critically acclaimed album “15 Minutes” and has subsequently released two albums, To Be Frank and You’ve Got To Laugh.

He has received accolades from such legends as Eric Clapton and Miles Davis and has been nominated for four Brit Awards.

Following a successful series of intimate gigs in 2008, Nik is now back on the road, this time solo, presenting a show which features all his hits, plus material from his more recent albums.

ASH GRUNWALD

£10.00

Thursday 26th March

It is too simplistic to describe Ash Grunwald as just a blues musician. While it's true that his music is steeped in the Delta blues tradition of the legendary acoustic musicians who proliferated in pre-World War 11 Americas deep South and the giants of electric blues who shaped rock and roll, it's the young Victorian's willingness to combine these influences with grooves and sounds common in contemporary music that sets him apart.
